Zakat
from Al-Quduri (may Allah show him mercy)
What does it mean? Grow and purify. Legally it’s to pay
someone a specific amount for the sake of Allah (the Exalted)
What is the amount? 2.5 % or one pound of out of forty
What is nisab? Is the threshold once reached the zakah
becomes necessary to pay, they have to meet the threshold for one year or most
of the year. The nisab is the value of one hundred grams of gold. (8.3 tola
approx)
Who has to pay? It is necessary for each free, Muslim, mature
who has appropriate funds for a year to pay.
Who is exempt? Children, insane, indebted slave, one whose
debt are more than funds.
What you not pay zakat on?
Housing, clothes you wear, furniture, vehicles, servants of the house,
tools you use – basically anything for personal use. You have to own what you
are paying zakah for. No zakah for an extra house unless you want to sell it
but you pay zakah on the money attained from renting.
What do you pay zakah on? Wealth, gold 100 grams, silver 700
grams, camel more than five, cows more than thirty, sheep more than thirty
Gold? It is paid on 20 gram increments after threshold is
reached.
Silver in 140 gram increments after threshold is reached.
Trading stock? If it reaching the value of 100 grams of gold
then you pay zakah on it.
Fruits? A tenth according to AH and if it reaches 165 litres
according to IM and AY. Nothing for vegetables.
How do you give zakah? By intention when handing over or
when separating from other wealth.
Who can you pay it to? There are eight categories mentioned
that you can pay zakah to.

Free a slave who has agreed
fee for freedom

In debt: the one needing to
pay debt now
7.
In the path of Allah: hajj,
student of knowledge

Ibn sabeel: person who has
lost his wealth without access to it
You can pay or all or one but shafi’s have to pay to each.
Who can you not pay it to?

Non Muslim –dhimmi
2.
Build Masjid
3.
Not for kafan
4.
Buy slave to free
5.
Rich - more than nisab
6.
Cannot give to grandfather
nor to grandchildren or vice versa
7.
Nor husband to wife or vice
versa
8.
Ahl Al-Bayt: family of Ali,
Abbas, Jafir, Aqeel, Harith (may Allah be pleased with them) and their
servants.
If you give zakah to someone who you thought was poor but
was rich do you repeat it? Not according to reliable position of AH and IM
Disliked to transfer zakah to another country but should be
disturbed in the region the person is in. With the exception of a disaster that
strikes a people.
Sadaqa/fitra
Necessary on whoever pays zakah.
He pays for young children not older. Wife pays for herself.
The value? 2.5 kg of the value of wheat.

Mustab to give before prayer. It can be paid in advance.

needs to be paid.
Udiyyah/sacrifice
AH wajib, IM and AY emphasised Sunnah (reliable position)
Everyone who pays zakah performs it for himself and he pays
for young children
For each one a sheep, camel or seven year old cow.
The person travelling at this time does not perform it
The time is the tenth of dhu hijjah after the eid prayer. It
