Seven Different types of Sheikh

Classically, the term Sheikh was given to an elder of a tribe, typically the leader. Later, it became known to be referred to someone who had reached a level of scholarship. It was a rare title that was not given to many.

Know the real scholar makes scholars not opinionated individuals - that's not scholarship.

Seven different types

1. The student who studies with a scholar for x years then is confirmed by those whom he studies with.

2. The sheikh who is not there but on his way hopefully.

3. Because he supports the sheikh he "becomes" one. The sheikh declares him because he pays his wages.

4. The sheikh who knows nothing maybe not even to read Arabic script but is magically prompted?!?

5. The ustadh who has studied a bit but not completed his studies.

6. The one who prompts himself or the academic who has studied Islam devoid of traditional methods or time scale.

7. The one who everyone thinks he has knowledge but has none.

Do not be fooled into thinking that all scholars are number one. Most are between three to seven. I am not joking.

In terms of Tasawwaf some individuals were named 'Sheikh' but were not scholars of traditional sense.

As for myself I have been given this title by my teachers even though I do not deserve it.

Miracle of Circumcision

Dialogue with Sheikh Muhammad Amin Sheiko and Sir John G Bennet

This is an extract from an unpublished work called Sources of Spring, which Sheikh Atabek Shukurov gave us permission to quote, in which there was a dialogue between the above mentioned names. Sheikh Muhammad Amin 1890-1964 was a known wali and a scholar and Sir John G Bennet was looking for answers. Please note the Sheikh made the following statement before modern studies in biology so this is a miracle of one of the Awilya.

Sir John Bennet asked:
“If God is perfect, why did He create the foreskin which covers the tip of the penis and ordered us to cut it? This causes acute dermatitis. The question relates to the circumcision of the children. Why has God created this extra skin which has no function, and why has He ordered us to cut it? If it has a function what for is the circumcision? If it has no function why did He create it? Where is the Godly perfection?”

Sheikh Muhammad Amin Sheiko answered:
It is well known that the human body consists of flesh, bones and nerves. It is also known that the nervous person`s body does not grow well healthy, and he always remains thin, even if he eats such a lot of food, and increases the number of daily diets.
The embryo in the female`s womb remains in a critical stage in the nine months, because it is in the critical vital forming stage. Since the skin of the penis is a gathering place of very sensitive nerves, it is affected by any friction which causes a general alertness of the nerves in the whole body. As the place of the embryo in the womb is narrow, to suit the embryo`s size, the embryo is always bent and turned up and its movement increases in the last months.
This movement excites the nerves of the skin of the penis, thus the growth of the embryo is hampered because the movements destroy the cells, or leads to a weakness in growth.
So this skin protects this sensitive area from being affected by any shock which causes friction when the embryo moves in the womb, and by that the body attains its safety and perfection. Exactly as a thermos keeps its contents isolated from the outer factors.
After the birth, he enters a new type of life different from his previous one. He is now stretched and there is no friction with the nerves of the skin of the penis.
This skin becomes extra and it should be cut because it exists in a glandular area where infection can take place and where dirt and germs may gather under the skin causing acute dermatitis, and infection.
God created the foreskin when the embryo was in the womb of its mother because this organ which Almighty God has made, as an exit for the urine, has made it also, because of its other function composed of a tissue of nervous tissue interconnected deliberately.
Since the end of this organ which is called a skin is very sensitive. If it was exposed to a friction with anything, then that friction will lead to a nervous stress leading to a general stress in the nervous system. It is taken for granted that this stress and sensation will result in a decrease in growth. Because of that, it is necessary, for the growth of the embryo in his mother`s womb and its completeness, to have a membrane which prevents the head of that organ from what might be in touch or in friction with during the consecutive movement of the embryo in his mother`s womb.
Thus growth is natural and the embryo is born with sound health and body.

Let us now speak about circumcision after birth:

When the embryo is born and his body`s systems begin to function and the urinary passage begins to do its task, there may be some mold scratch or pathological symptoms, therefore, God the Almighty orders circumcision to protect the body from such troubles.
Therefore, the existence of the skin is necessary for the embryo while it is in its mother`s womb, It denotes the perfection of creation and the marvelous divine discipline. It’s cutting after birth and existing in life is necessary and a mercy from God to man.

Sheikh Muhammad Makki al-Kittani

http://www.dahsha.com/viewarticle.php?id=13578
Translated by Arfan Shah

We present the biography of the virtuous Sheikh Muhammad Makki Al-Kittani (may Allah show him mercy) leader of the Syrian scholars. He is described by Sheikh Abu Fatah Abu Ghuda in the biography of the Sheikh Al-Kaffi in his book “Bachelor Scholars” page two hundred and sixty eight; he mentioned Shiekh As-Sayyid Makki Al-Kittani, “He is our teacher As-Sayyid As-Sharif Al-Jalil Sheikh Makki Al-Kittani (may Allah show him mercy) of Damascus; gatherer of virtue; inheritor of giants; exemplar; refuge of the scholars in leadership; virtuous intention in easing the difficulties; Spirit of Syria and one of its scholars; the refuge of the people from tribulations and harm and when his light went, his light did not re-emerge.”

Birth and upbringing

As-Sayyid Muhammad Al-Makki ibn Imam Muhammad ibn Idress Al-Kittani Al-Idressi Al-Hassani was born Fez (Maroc) in the year 1312 h/1894 ce. His lineage is traced back to our master Al-Hassan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with them).
The clothing that God dressed him is piety, love of knowledge, love of scholars from an early age. Brought up in a house of knowledge, happiness and honour. He was under much care and studied knowledge with his father; likewise he studied in Qaraween grand masjid. He continued from a childhood to maturity by the indication of his father. So he became skilled in swimming, shooting, horse riding, fishing, swordsmanship.

His trip to Medina and Egypt:

He migrated to Medina in the year one thousand, three hundred and twenty nine, together with his father Imam Muhammad ibn Ja’far Al-Kittani and his brother As-Sayyid Muhammad Al-Zamzami; intending to visit nobility, passing by Al-Azhar in Egypt. When the settled, for a period, on the wealth that Sheikh Makki Al-Kittani was given from the scholars of Al-Azhar. In Arabia he completed his memorisation of the Majestic Quran and continued to receive knowledge at the hands of its greatest scholars. They were: prophetic narration expert of the sacred sanctuaries ‘Umar Hamadan Al-Maharsi who he studied “Al-Ajrumiyyah,” “Al-Aliffyya of Ibn Malik,” some of the epistle of Ibn Abu Zaid Al-Qariwani; Mufti As-Sayyid Ahmed ibn Ismail Al-Barzaniji; Sheikh AbdulBaqi Al-Ansari Al-Lukuwi; Sheikh Abdulqadir As-Shabli Al-Tarablsi. As well as studying many of the books of prophetic narration at the hands of his father. During this trip he went to perform pilgrimage.
Then returned to Morocco by the agreement of the Sultan AbdulHafiz, he resided there for a number of years and he took from As-Sayyid Muhammad ibn Idress Al-Qadari, Sheikh Al-Juma’h Ahmed ibn Al-Khyat Az-Zakari and his uncle As-Sayyid Ahmed ibn Ja’far Al-Kittani, Abu Shayab Ad-Dakali, As-Sayyid Abdulkabir Al-Kittani and he received licences from them.

Settling in Damascus and receiving knowledge from its major scholars

In the midst of the First World War, he travelled with his father and brother to the Levante, Syria. Where he followed it by receiving knowledge upon the hands of its scholars and upon their leader of prophetic narrations Sheikh Badrudeen Al-Hassani, Sheikh Ameen Sawyd, Sheikh Tawfiq Al-Ayyubi and others. Then he travelled to Baghdad, then to India and took from some of its scholars. Then he returned to Damascus and remained there until the revolution of the Druze, when he returned to Morocco with his father. There, his father died in the city of “Fasfi” on the sixteenth of Ramadan in the year one thousand and forty five. Then he returned to Damascus and resided there, spread knowledge and beckoned to Allah (mighty and majestic).

Islamic and knowledge activities

He continued his lessons, knowledge activities and rectification from his house in the province of “As-Salahiyya;” Then he taught in the province of “Al-Mazan;” then in his house in the province of “Al-‘Amara;” as well as other majids in Damascus, like the grand Ummayyad, Sheikh Muhiyyudeen, As-Sanjaqar and other Syrian masjids; without wage. He studied various knowledge and sciences, specialising in Prophetic narration, their reporters and their comprehension, spirituality and Maliki jurisprudence. He focused upon the Muslim youth to direct them to the correctly in religious issues. Because of this intention he set up many gatherings and assemblies of thought with the objective to rectify the religion, and how to defeat the colonists. He founded (The youth association of Damascus) its house became a centre for citizens of the freedom fighters, the scholars and the educated elite. He was able with his sincerity and dedication to serve the religious and national issues that reinforced the position of the scholars. He wanted to effect reform thought, social, political; making it the focus of attention for party leaders and political forces. Seen as most of them sought his support and satisfaction, when they participated with him, in influencing the national and youth communities.

His Struggle

This was effective in combating against the invading French forces by calling to arms assisting his brothers of the nationalist leaders like: Sheikh Muhammad Al-Ashmari, Sheikh Hassan Al-Kharat and other leaders of the Syrian revolution.
As he (may Allah show him mercy) organised a Palestinian task force called “Palestinian Youth” from some students and followers which increased in the country of Syria from the Palestinian, Syrian and Jordanians. This was arranged with the fighters Al-Hajj Ameen Al-Hassani and Al-Hajj Farhan As-Sa’adi from the year nineteen thirty six. This began a daring action against the forces of the British and Zionist in occupied Palestine. This continued for several years, he was totally cognisant of the danger of the Zionist attack on life and the furore of the Arabic and Islamic nations. This led him to increase his support for the fighters in Palestine, materially and morally.

When the youth resistance was established in nineteen fifty six he took part in it; he was the deputy president to the confederation of scholars; he was drilled with his colleagues the scholars of Damascus on archery, carrying and weaponry, as is the noble tradition.

Founding of the association of scholars and his leadership

After Syria independence he founded the association of scholars and was chosen as the deputy to president Sheikh Abu l’Khar Al-Madani, for a period. Then he became the president after the death of the erudite spiritual guide Abu l’Khar Al-Madani in the Islamic year one thousand and eighty. He remained its president until he returned to Allah in the year nineteen hundred and seventy three. This association included members of the best acting scholars in Syria. It included the gathering of the association of scholars of the virtuous erudite scholar Abu l’Khar Al-Madini, the president; the virtuous erudite scholar Ibrahim Al-Ghalini; the virtuous erudite scholar Hassan Habanaka Al-Madini; the virtuous erudite scholar Muhammad Salih Farfour; the virtuous erudite scholar Muhammad Sa’id Al-Burhani; the virtuous erudite scholar ‘Abdulwahab Dubs wa zayt; the erudite scholar ‘Abdulkarim Ar-Rifa’i; the erudite scholar ‘Abdurrahman Az-Za’bi; the virtuous erudite scholar ‘Abdurraouf Abu Tawq; the virtuous erudite scholar Muhammad Balanku legal edict of Halab and many others. It was the important assembly of religious and intellectual that influenced the social and political current events; especially the representatives of the Syrian elections.

His role in the political life of Syria

He had a prominent role in the political life in Syria after independence, until the beginning of this century. The leaders, ministers, presidents sought his support and acceptance.

His important role in the Morocco

Despite being busied with the problems of the East Arab countries, he worked towards rectifying the Arabs and Muslim there. But this did not prevent him and them from the importance of the Morocco. His house was a meeting point for freedom fighters, leaders, presidents and Moroccan students despite their differing upbringing and political membership. From that they sought to establish a political front for freedom in Morocco; through the support of his Moroccan brothers they provided physical support, political and religious support to the Moroccan and Algerian freedom fighters.

His call to found global Islamic association

He called for a global Islamic association in the noble city of Mecca. He was a founding member of its Council Constitutive.

He visited many kings, presidents, scholars of the Arab and Islamic world; heading a delegation of rightly guided scholars.

The Moroccan scholars were keen on establishing an association for scholars and they did not leave until most of the scholars were under the banner of this conference; they agreed take part in the city of “Fez.”

After his return from Western Africa he distanced himself from global work and just concentrated on beckoning to Allah (the exalted). His illness from physical and emotional scare did not prevent him from a battle during Ramadan. He prepared a division for war with the support of leading soldiers and individuals of the West Africans who participated in the war. He provided guidance to them, supplicated for them to encourage the Syrian to victory. Then he visited the Syrian and West African wounded officers and soldiers; giving them presents.

Physical and characteristic attributes

He was a man of average height; pale complexion; large limbs and build; broad shoulders; extremely pale body; large head; dark eyebrows; beautiful appearance; sweet speech; his tongue was Moroccan mixed with the Damascus dialect, sometimes and he wore the dress of the West African scholars.

A great scholar of great stature; possessing high moral conduct; frequent reciter of the noble Quran, constant in remembrance; concerned with the prophetic practice and its implementation; he commanded good and forbade evil; he loved the scholars and respected them when present and in absence; he praised those deserving of praise; he did not mention people expect by good; humble residence; he had a presence; generous; open handed; he specified a wide room for visitors, it was not empty day or night; traven for relatives; they arrived there, he began by greeting them; he divided his money into half for them and divided the other part into two: one for his guests and the other for his family.

He joked sweetly; self evident intuition; dazzling intellectual. The scholars of his era testified that he was a reference for Maliki Jurisprudence, spirituality, speech of the people, their guidance. His gatherings were gathering of vehemence, knowledge and invocation.

He disliked innovation; loved the prophetic practice; stopping at the prohibitions of Allah; inclined to weep; a deep sadness over the condition of the Muslims and troubles by pain in his body but he hid it from his relatives and patiently preserved.

His Death

Several weeks after a battle in Ramadan, in the year thirteen hundred and ninety three, he passed into the mercy Allah; after the sunset prayer on Monday the 16th of Dhul-Qaidah or the tenth of December nineteen hundred and seventy three. After a surgical operation in the Dar As-Shifa hospital he was prayed over in the Grand Ummayyad masjid on the following day. He was buried in the graveyard of his family in Bab As-Saghir during sunset; where masses of believers gave eulogies from the leading scholars, presidents, minsters, ambassadors and dignitaries. He received the speech of scholars at his grave; Sheikh Hassan Al-Khatib spoke as did Sheikh ‘Abduraof Abu Toaq. His condolences were received in the Grand Ummayyad Masjid, the Syrian and West African callers to prayer continued to recite the noble Quran on that day for his pure soul. The gatherings of condolences were held openly in Damascus, Rabat, Jeddah and the illuminated city Medina.

His offspring and students

He left behind, may Allah show him mercy, seven male children, innumerable students and followers; the elite of the leading scholars in Syria, Egypt, Arabia and Western Africa.

His distinguished students are; Sheikh Fatah, the virtuous Sheikh Tajuddeen, Ustad ‘Umar, the Engineer Muhammad Khalid, the researcher and doctor ‘AbdulQadir writer of the book “The choice prophetic narrations,” teachers of high Islamic sciences, chairman of the board of trustees in the Arab and Islamic teaching centres, Doctor ‘Abdullah and The Engineer Muhammad Ali. Every single one was distinguished in each of its Arab and Islamic country. They spread knowledge, thought and community; in addition to their work and special concerns. May Allah bless them and make their knowledge, righteousness continues in this blessed family.

Sheikh Adib Al-Kallas

This is the complete biography of the Scholar Muhammad Adeeb Al-Kallas may Allah The exalted preserve him.

Translation by arfan shah

The Erudite scholar, The Learned Teacher, The Abstainer, The Jurist, the Scholar Muhammad Adeeb Al-Kallas ibn Ahmed ibn Al-Ḥajj, Deeb Ad-Damashiqi in origin and known and worked as Al-Kallas.

Childhood and upbringing

He was born in Damascus, Syria, in the province of Al-Qamariyya during the year
1921. He was named Muhammad Deeb Al-Kallas. His father Ahmed Al-Kallas was a fighter against the French occupation, he was known as being able to remember the book of Allah mighty and majestic at any time. He was famous for this and the scrupulousness of his work. His mother was our lady Dariya Al-Kallas who was known for her generous nature, excellent character, forbearance and etiquette. She passed away whilst Sheikh Muhammad Adeeb Al-Kallas was a boy; he was taken care of by his sister and his aunt. From a young age he was known his vivaciousness, his intelligence and realising the truth, above all else.

Teachers he received knowledge from

His father admitted him into the elementary schools of the scholars, in order to receive beneficial knowledge. These civil schools took fees when accepting students, in their desire to move away from the government schools during the time of French occupation. He studied in Al-Kukummyya school, then to Al-Jawharriyya As-Safarjlniyya School. Where he met the scholar Jalaludeen Muhammad ‘Id As-Safarjalniyya, he at the time, was the absolute edict authority.

Then he moved to the Al-Miniyya Madrasa; one of the teachers in there was Sheikh Kamal Al-Baghali; He also studied with Sheikh Muhammad Khair Al-Jalalad. Then he transferred to a Quranic school and the school of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Munjani; then to Al-Irshad school of learning.

When he reached the age of ten years old, in the year nineteen thirty one, he had read the forty prophetic narration collection of An-Nawawi and Principles of Jurisprudence in The light of clarification/Nur Al-Idah.

Then his father placed him into the tailoring profession; where he used to work until the middle of the night. During this time he was not able to follow Sheikh Muhammad As-Salah Al-Farfori.

After this, he worked with his father in the craft of limekiln. He began to frequent two circles, one gathering of invocation of blessings on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the circle of Sheikh Hashim Al-Khateeb who recited the Noble Quran. The reason for him returning to receive knowledge from Sheikh Muhammad Salah Al-Farfuri was that Sheikh Adeeb Al-Kallas was helping his younger brother solve his dilemmas, in the levels of his advanced studies. His brother was shocked by him and said to him, “If you studied with me, you would have reached the highest ranks.” His younger brother was unable to explain the lessons of his teachers. He said to Sheikh Adeeb Al-Kallas, “If you had gone with me to the masjid then you would find precise answers to your questions." He said, “I know, that.”

So when the erudite scholar Muhammad Salih Al-Farfori saw him again, he welcomed him and said, “Your face is like the illuminated moon.” As he knew his acumen, his intelligence and his ability to memorise. He began to attend the circles of the teacher Abdul-Halim Faris; who he read the second part of the book on Arabic grammar/Al-Kitab by Sibawayih.

He won first place in an examination and the prize was the book The Qusharian Epistles/Risala Qusharyri from the Erudite Scholar Muhammad Salih Al-Farfour. The book remained with the Sheikh, as it was dear to him, he would read it a third time, and a forth time; as well as Ibn ‘Aqeel and Clear eloquence.

He also read with Sheikh Abdurrazzaq Al-Halabi; some concise texts of jurisprudence. Then he read about the science of Islamic belief of the various major works with Sheikh Muhammad Salih Al-Farfur; he studied with him most of the openings of knowledge, sciences, logic, laws of inheritance, Quranic exegesis, prophetic narrations, jurisprudence, metrics of poetry, science of prophetic narrations, spirituality and belief and some of the summaries of Imam Al-‘Amali.

The time of the dawn prayer is a time of worship for the Sheikh, then a time to study the commentary of Ibn Abideen and the evening, after the sunset prayer, he would follow up with the lessons. As for the day Sheikh Adeeb would work with his father. The Sheikh memorised the Alifyya of Ibn Malik and specific lessons, he would repeat them in order to memorise them during the day.

The Sheikh came to the fore in a major way; it was if he gathered and contained all of what he studied in his chest until he became a great mountain of knowledge walking on the Earth. Despite this he did not cease to assist his father in his work. He was keen to attain his satisfaction by working with him during the day and seeking knowledge during the night.

Then Allah wanted him to devote himself to calling to Allah (the Exalted); he was an Imam and lecturer in various Masjids of Damascus. He taught the knowledge that he had received from his teachers.

Then the Sheikh adorned his knowledge by studying by reading with the erudite scholar At-Tayyab Muhammad Abu l-Yusr ‘Abideen; the Islamic legal edict issuer of Syria. Who used to say the following about him, “If only I knew you earlier.” He became astonished by his knowledge, intellect, his accuracy in issues of knowledge, his eloquent debates, his humbleness and his abstinence.

He studied with the erudite scholar Mahmood Faiz Ad-Diyr’atani some of the sections of the Majestic Quran. Often, the erudite scholar Ad-Diyr’atani praised him for his propensity and aptitude. He would ask him about some issues and would be surprised at the responses of Sheikh Adeeb Al-Kallas.

Similarily, he studied with Sheikh Faozi Al-Munir, Sheikh Ahmed Abdulmajid Ad-Dawmani who was a student Sheikh Muhammad Halim Al-Halawani, scholar of Quranic recitations in his time. He also studied the Quran with Sheikh Abu Hassan Al-Khabaz and he was known for his expertise with the book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).

The scholars he received authorisation from

The learned scholar Sheikh Muhammad Salih Al-Farfur gave him a general authorisation in the legal sciences of law, Arabic and others. As did Shiekh At-Tayyab Abu l-Yusr Abideen, the former head legal edict of Syria.

He also received authorisation from Sheikh Muhammad Sa’id Al-Burhani in the spiritual path of As-Shadhali. Allah honoured him with an authorisation from Sheikh Ahmed Wahaj As-Saddiqi Al-Pakistani, born in Mecca, in the spiritual path of Naqshabandi, Chisti, Qadiri, Saharwardi and Qalandari. He exchanged authorisations with Sheikh Abdurrazzaq Al-Halabi and Sheikh Muhammad ibn Alawi Al-Makki.

Sheikh was travelling in Arabia where he met with leading scholars and prophetic narration experts. They exchanged authorisations with each other. When some of the students of the Sheikh or their children knew this, then the Sheikh did not mention this on his tongue out of humbleness and fear of Allah to become pleased with himself. He said, “I am Kallas, I do not have anything but the blessings of Allah.”

Concern of knowledge, teaching and guiding

The Sheikh excelled in debate, removing doubtful matters, refuting the parties of whims, heretics and innovators. As he is enamoured with doctrine and theology, this is the reason that he was a bearer of proof and evidence; with contentment of the magnanimity of big heart, copious humbleness and profuse abstinence.

He had a vast share in the knowledge of inheritance, jurisprudence and the lofty knowledges. Perhaps the most beloved knowledge to him was jurisprudence and doctrine. Sheikh Abu l-Yusr ‘Abideen described him as resemblance to The Distinguisher Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he used to enjoy, from his nature, to rebuke falsehood and he did not fear in Allah the reprisal. He taught in Al-Fath institute since its inception, Al-Mayniyya school, some secondary schools like Dar At-Taqafa and As-Shariq.

He was humble to the student of knowledge, he did not refuse to teach, if there was a student who wanted to read a concise text in the principles of knowledge or jurisprudence, he would never turn them away. He would say, “These are my free times, if you find something appropriate then put the time which you need.” Then he would read in it with them. He was asked about his pupils and students, “They are my teachers as knowledge purifies by consensus and virtue is from Allah.”

He would not issue a legal edict except by the reliable opinion of the school; if the matter was severely constricted he would go to the teachers of the other schools and their reliable positions, if he knew that the position was with them.

The Sheikh would begin his response to the entire question by hoping to gain reward from it. He did not beckon to decency or to goodness through explanation except that it was answered. He did not beckon to benevolence without seeking to complete it.

Students of the Sheikh

His students are those who read to him or those present in his lessons. They are enumerable and from all the Islamic lands. Those that graduated from the Islamic Al-Fath institute. The Sheikh authorised those students who has graduated from Al-Fath institute, or those continually in his lessons, those he saw the keenness of seeking knowledge, he gave them all with an authorisation from his teachers by Al-Ma’qula wa Al-Manqul. Advising them to commit to one of the four school of jurisprudence: Hanafi, Shaf’i, Maliki and the proven chains of Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal. He also supplicated for them by heart.

Whoever read with the Sheikh loved him, whoever asked him once believed him, whoever entered his house witnessed his humbleness, whoever heard his words knew his justice and whoever looked at him saw his light and awe.

The posts to which he was appointed

Sheikh held a position of delivering the Friday sermon in the masjid “Taht Al-Qanatir” located close to the book shop “’Anbir,” in the masjid Al-Qatt, near the grand Ummayyad masjid and similarly in the masjid of our lady Ruqiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) during the occupation. Then in the masjid Tankaz. Likewise, he used to work as a Friday speaker and Imam in Al-Khair in the province of Al-Muhajaroon, he taught how to give legal edicts.

Finally, he held a similar position in the masjid Al-Hammd on the hill of Qaiswan Al-Mutala in Damascus. He used to teach in Al-Fath institute in the department of specialisation in the branch of masculine and feminine. He taught secondary schools of Dar At-Taqafa, As-Sharq and Al-Mayaniya school in the chapter of Al-Jabayya.

The Sheikh sought focus in teaching and calling to Allah, in many Arab and non Arab countries, there is no shame in stating its importance. He would remind his students, not to forget the virtue between them.

Some of the characteristics of the Sheikh

He is generous with all that is in his possession.

He is humble towards the students of knowledge.

He dislikes oppression and apportioning the oppressed.

Whoever borrowed money from the Sheikh; he did not ask for his money even if they did not give it.

He did not like to exclude good to himself, he preferred others over himself.

He shows great manners towards his teachers and the possessors of knowledge.

Jestful, affectionate and gentle.

He loved his close family much and assisted them.

He preferred the lesson and seeking knowledge over rest and the like.

He did not like to be known; he liked humbleness and disliked arrogance.

He loved return them to righteousness and hoped that they would become servants of Allah.

He looked at things and what is behind them, without being misled by position or wealth.

He mentioned the known people with goodness, always. He supported them and called them to good.

He loved to assist the needs of people and to intercede for them.

Good to his friends and preferred them over himself.

He comprehended every word said and responded quickly with the truth.

If the poor asked him, he gave what was in his hand or said I will give you what you like, do you see anything that you want then take it.

He loved clarity and eloquence. What he disliked was hinting to people and imposing himself on them.

He loved to go to major and minor pilgrimage. He would love to spend a whole month there; the period of pilgrimage was when he would worship and draw closer to Allah.

He loved the righty guided khalifs after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said the doctrine of the Muslim is in them; he ordered them in virtue as they; he loved, honoured and praised the Prophetic household; he defended the Companions and did not mention them in anything but good. He said, “This is a just Muslim of the Prophetic household who loves all the companions and does not harm in the slightest."

He loved the spiritual leaders of the righteous servants of Allah and the men of Allah who are unknown except by their steadfastness and pious actions.

He had confidence in what Allah has and did not turn towards anything else.

His writer (of this) is his son Ahmed Al-Kallas lecturer in masjid Al-Hammd, a member of the administration of Al-Fath institute. When it was read to the Sheikh (may Allah pardon him) he said, “O’ Allah, O’ Forgiver.”

On the 21st October 2009 the Sheikh passed onto the mercy of Allah. May Allah (the Almighty) bless the Sheikh in his grave and make it a restful place where he experiences the coolness of the breeze of Paradise until an appointed time. It is with great sadness that we say that we were unable to meet the Sheikh so if you get a chance to meet great scholars do not delay and go ahead. We do not know that will happen in the future and our time on Earth is limited.

The errors of the teacher

This is a tricky one, you may have a teacher who mocks you or makes fun of you or teases you. If this occurs, overlook it, whilst you are studying with him. Do not let yourself dislike your teacher, concentrate on your subject and do not waver. If it is a subject that doesn't make a difference to your daily needs, in terms of knowledge, you may think about finding another teacher.

Or you could simply finish the text with that scholar and then find another teacher. To find another teacher may be more difficult than it may seem.

The best advice is to study with him and ignore his manners, unless it reaches a limit that it becomes common knowledge. So that he may be condemned by the average person.

Study hard and keep your work up, do not allow yourself to be distracted by anyone.

Knowledge is too precious to be distracted from by something small.

It is also important to note that the teacher may not think he is mocking you when he does. He may think it is funny and that you too are taking it as a joke as well.

Only consider leaving the teacher if you know he commits major wrong actions publicly and he doesn't repent openly. Also please note, you may have a teacher who is gossiped about, so check the stories you hear and don't take the persons word for it.

You may have students that are jealous of you and don't want you to study with that scholar, so beware of that as well.

Sheikh Gibril Haddad

The Way of the Ulema part two of two

What is dear, can only be obtained, dearly

We should see the rewards, in these times of Fitna

Sayyid Muhammad ibn Jafar al-Kittani, used to give advice to the kings of Morocco, he left twice because they did not listen to him. He went to Medina and then the Sultan came there and asked to be a Murid. He told him to go the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and ask for forgiveness there.

What is Tasawwuf? Except the living embodiment of the Sunna
