Supplication of Istikharah

 
عَنْ  جَابِرٍ  رَضِيْ  اَللهُ  عَنْهُ  قَالَ   : كَانَ  رَسُولُ  اللَّهِ  صَلَّى اللهُ عَلِيهِ وَسَلَّمْ  يُعَلِّمُنَا  الْاِسْتِخَارَةَ   فِي   الْأُمُورِ كُلِّهَا   كَمَا   يُعَلِّمُنَا   السُّورَةَ   مِنْ   الْقُرْآنِ   يَقُوْلُ   : إِذَا  هَمَّ   أَحَدُكُمْ   بِالْأَمْرِ   فَلْيَرْكَعْ   رَكْعَتَيْنِ  مِنْ  غَيْرِ الْفَرِيضَةِ   ثُمَّ    لِيَقُلْ   : ( اَللَّهُمَّ        إِنِّي   أَسْتَخِيْرُكَ    بِعِلْمِكَ    وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ   بِقُدْرَتِكَ    وَ   أَسْأَلُكَ    مِنْ   فَضْلِكَ   الْعَظِيمِ   فَإِنَّكَ   تَقْدِرُ   وَ لَا أَقْدِرُ   وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ  عَلَّامُ  الْغُيُوبِ ؕ  اَللَّهُمَّ    إِنْ  كُنْتَ  تَعْلَمُ  أَنَّ   هَذَا  الْأَمْرَ     خَيْرٌ    لِّيْ   فِيْ  دِيْنِيْ  وَمَعَاشِيْ وَعَاقِبَةِ  أَمْرِيْ)  أَوْ  قَالَ : (عَاجِلِ أَمْرِيْ وَآجِلِهِ   فَاقْدُرْهُ   لِيْ   وَيَسِّرْهُ   لِيْ  ثُمَّ   بَارِكْ   لِيْ   فِيْهِ   اَللَّهُمَّ   وَإِنْ  كُنْتَ  تَعْلَمُ  أَنَّ  هَذَا   الْأَمْرَ   شَرٌّ   لِيْ   فِيْ  دِيْنِيْ  وَمَعَاشِيْ وَعَاقِبَةِ    أَمْرِيْ)  أَوْ    قَالَ :( عَاجِلِ  أَمْرِيْ  وَآجِلِهِ   فَاصْرِفْهُ  عَنِّيْ وَاصْرِفْنِيْ  عَنْهُ  وَاقْدُرْ   لِيَ الْخَيْرَ  حَيْثُ  كَانَ   ثُمَّ  ارْضِنِيْ  بِهِ  ).ؕ

 وَفِي رِواية   ( ثُمَّ رَضِّنِي ْ بِهِ)

transliteration

 

Allahumma inni astkhiurak bi’ilmika wa astaqdiruka biqudratika wa asaluka min fadlika L-Azeem fa innaka taqirru wa la aqiru wa ta’alam wa la ‘alam wa anta ‘allam Al-ghayub, Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha l-amruk (mention your need here) khyrun li fi dini wa m’ashi wa aqibah amri aw qal ‘ajila amri wa aajali faqdiru li wa yasirau li thumma barik li fihi Allahumma wa in kunta  ta’alam inna hadha amru (mention your need) sharun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibah amri aw qal ‘ajili mari wa aajilihi fasrifu ani wasrifni ani waqaduri li l-khayr hathu kan thumma ardini bihi (mention your need), in another narration, thumma radini bihi.

 

 

 

Translation

 

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah used to teach how to make the istikharah supplication for all our concerns as he would teach us a Sura from the Quran. He said, “If you are concerned about a matter pray two units of supererogatory prayer then (supplicate) say, O Allah, I seek guidance by your knowledge, I seek assistance by you decree and I beseech you for your great bounty, as you ordain and I do not, you know and I do not know, and you knower of the unseen. O Allah, if you know that this matter (mention your need) is good for me, my religion, my livelihood and the succession of my affairs...” or say, “Bring it for my concern, as you decreed, make it easy for me then bless me in it.” Or say, “O Allah, if you know this concern (mention your need) is evil for me, for my religion, my livelihood and the succession of my affairs. Then turn it me away from it and turn it away from me, and ordain for me goodness where it is then make me pleased by it.” (mention your need) Or in another narration, “Then make me pleased by it.”

Narrated by Al-Bukhari hadith number one thousand one hundred and sixty six. 

 

Please note there are various different narrations of this hadith.

 

Signs?

You could receive a dream or a sign but most of all look for facilitation of the events that you are asking. So if it is a marriage and then you make this dua and lots of things go well then it is a sign.

Signs that are dreams can be read wrongly because other events might interfere with your dua. Have a clear mind and do not incline to either way.

It is important to note that even with this dua what might turn out right. Things can fall apart in moments from years of work. When something does fall apart then know that is the best thing for you at that time.
