Dowra notes nine
Awarif Al Ma’arif
Praise be to the one who gives various gifts
In each place there is a right thing to say
All these things have an effect of the heart, anyone who raises above them will not be effected by these things (trails)
It depends on what is in the heart, that will cause effect
People who have a firm conviction will not be effected by these things and the speech of human beings will not have an effect on anyone because they are present with Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala
The one who is strong, will fill with longing when he hears poetry which reminds him of Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala, so he can be reminded
He was never in a state of loss, so he didn’t change
As soon as you remember Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala, you will forget your own existance
As is it can a poet Labids verse, “Everything except Allah is futile.” The Prophet (Peace and blessing be upon him) said there was no truer speech from a poet
The Prophet (Peace and blessing be upon him) used to wake up in the night and affirm the truth
Allah Subhnau wa ta'ala says in his book that he never sent a Prophet, except that he was sent to be obeyed by his permission
Some people think they have some light but they are veiled by another veil
There are 70,000 veils between us and Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala if they had not been there, everything would’ve been burned
The Prophet (Peace and blessing be upon him) cried when he heard Ibn Masud (May Allahs mercy be with him) recited the ayat that the Prophet will be brought forward as a witness on the day of judgement
People of reality of certainty cry, for a high reason

Dowra notes seven
Awarif Al-Ma’arif
People who experience spiritual states shouldn’t mention them
Umar (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) would reflect, so deeply on the Quran and he would faint and pass out for days
All praise be to Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala
All dhkir has ranks
The state of the heart with Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala
Everything they do affects their hearts and they are concerned with the eyes and the hearts
So he doesn’t listen to the appropriate
The eyes and the ears are part of mans responsibility on himself
He guards these, by being careful to what enters these organs
Those are the people who are guarded and the people of the inner most core
By having this core this will need to follow and this is blessing from Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala
Imam Sharwardi (May Allah's Ta'ala mercy be with him) will mention different states of listening
Good works like reading the Quran, hadith and stories of the righteous it guides to good and guidance
This will busy their person with the good and remove them from bad
But if it is a bad music then it will lead to bad
Some of the companions used to recite poetry in order to make the camels go faster, the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) used to tell the companion to be easy because the camels would love his voice and go very fast
May righteous people used poetry to explain a meaning
If they use it to bad purposes then this can lead to sin
The general meaning of the word Sam’a it means listening
How many of us have had this happen to us?
One of the companions of Ibn Masud (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him)was in the market and he heard the Quran and he passed out for a day
There are good things in poetry and bad things
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) said poetry has wisdom in it
You can't always say its permissible or haram
Poetry can help people be reminded
Some peoples hearts become pure and that wont depend on what they listen to
Aisha (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with her) used to have a servant who used to sing to her and the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) came in and sat down. When Umar (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) came in, the servant fled, the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) laughed and Umar (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) wanted he hear what the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) was listening. Umar (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) refused to leave until he heard what the Prophet heard
Dawud (Upon him peace) used to recite beautifully that people used to expire and water used to stop, people used to gather to hear him sing

Dowra notes eight
Listening
Dancing is not appropriate for the scholars
The beginning is with Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala and the end is too
Sounds can have negative effects
The beginning is listening and this leads to a state of emotion with Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala
This emotion has an effect on the body and can make it move
People are at different levels and may want to move to some poetry
He may listen to something to that he needs to change about himself
If he has a high level of understanding then it will lead him to a higher level with Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala
They listen to poetry to be reminded of Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala, everything guides them to Allah Subhanu wa Ta’ala
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) once said to Ali (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) that he was from his family and Ali (May Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him) was so happy that he danced
The voice at the time of singing is not permitted and neither at the time of death i.e. wailing etc.
Imam Shafi (May Allah's Ta'ala mercy be with him) said there was no good in poetry, he also said a person who involves himself in singing a lot, his testification is not accepted
Singing can cause corruption in the heart
A woman’s singing voice is not permitted to listen to, in any state
The reality of tasawwaf is sincere intention
Its not appropriate for a student of knowledge to ask for money
There was once a man who took money from people to pay for guests and for charity, he was close to death and someone asked you will die and you haven’t paid any of these debts off. He said that Allah has promised to repay my debts and before he died someone came to pay his debt.

Imam Qusheri's favourite student
Imam Qusheri had a favourite student and people noticed that he liked him, others students became jealous.
So he set all of his students a task, kill this bird but do it where nobody is watching.
The students came back one by one with their birds killed except the favourite student.
He came back with the bird alive. He said, “I couldn’t find any spot where no one was looking.”
The students stopped what they where doing and realised why he liked him so much.
He was always aware that Allah Subhanu wa ta’ala was looking at him.

Dowra notes six
Awarif Al Ma’arif
Be context with things don’t complain a lot
These people are rewarded with poverty in the world, because he is in need and doesn’t ask for anything, they don’t sit with people
Others who sit with people don’t ask them for them anything, like the poor of the Jews
How come the poor are complaining about there state
The state of the Sufi has good etiquette with Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala, wherever Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala puts him
We have problems with ostentations don’t let other thoughts come into your heart
These are lowly things and don’t let your heart get attached by them and connect Yourself with Allah and know these lowly things, you have to turn away
If Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala blesses a person by informing him of his faults
He has to turn away from everything other than Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala
Every sincere person will try to be better than what the people think of him
If he doesn’t know what the legal ruling of something he must ask for it
The Prophet (peace and blessing upon him) reached such a state of humility that he cold be taken by the hand by any servant
Reciting the Quran with tawjeed is a means to get closer to Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala
And if he can he should reflect on every verse and bless us to among those people and continue for us to raise in ranks.
